September 2020: The Future of Software in the Energy Industry

30 Sep 2020
5:00pm - 6:30pm MDT

This program targets energy tech execs or any software exec interested in that sector and our member service providers interested in the energy sector.

There is a significant transition underway in the energy industry from both a business and a technology perspective. This session will discuss the impact of this transition on the traditional oil and gas software industry as well as opportunities in the renewable energy space.

Industry Transition

The traditional oil and gas industry has been changing from an exploration to an exploitation focus over the last few years. Operating companies have recognized the need to become more efficient, working with fewer people through workflow automation and remote operations.

  • Where do we see the main opportunities for software companies in this space?
  • Does this remain an attractive space for investment by software companies?
  • Do we see this being dominated by large, integrated software vendors or is there an opportunity for small start-ups?

There is a longer-term migration to renewable energy and we see some of the larger oil and gas companies making significant bets in this space.

  • What are the opportunities for software vendors in the renewable energy space?
  • Is it possible for tradition oil and gas software companies to transition into this space?
  • Is it possible to establish a profitable software company around renewable energy?

Looking at the utilities industry:

  • Does the industry transition pose any challenges to software vendors in the near-term or longer-term?
  • Is it possible for start-ups to gain traction in the utilities space or do regulations mean that this will remain the domain of larger vendors?

Technology Transition

Several key industries have been transformed through the application of advanced technology including finance, transportation, and healthcare. The traditional oil and gas industry has typically not embraced transformational technology to the same degree:

  • Is it considered that technology adoption has been more advanced in the renewable energy and utilities industry?

With the pace of change in the digital technology field increasing rapidly, the software solutions of the future will look very different.

  • Which current technologies are most important for the future in the energy industry?
  • Will all solutions be SaaS based in the future; what do we see the lifespan of traditional on-prem application frameworks to be?
  • Can legacy software companies successfully make the transition?
